We are excited to introduce four incredible interns to the Solis team
This summer, we welcomed four bright young interns to the Solis team. Priyra Aidan, Joey Satka, David Junior and James Ledger all joined in July. Since then, they’ve dived into the world of cyber security, bringing fresh perspectives, curiosity and enthusiasm to all the projects they’ve worked on. Each of them has been eager to learn, tackle challenges, and make an impact.
In this blog, we’ll introduce you to Priyra, Joey, David and James, and explore what they’ve learned in their time at Solis so far. From mastering new technologies to gaining hands-on cyber security experience, they've all grown both personally and professionally. Read on to get to know our talented interns and hear about their experiences, insights and future plans!
Meet Priya
My name is Priyra Aidan. I’m one of the Cyber Security placement students at Solis. After completing my first two years studying Computer Science at the University of Leicester, I applied for this placement scheme with the aim of gaining valuable industry experience and immersing myself in the world of cyber security.
After four months working with the Solis Cyber Incident Management team, I’ve had the chance to confront real-world challenges and learn from experts in the field. A highlight has been working on live incident responses - an experience that’s given me some valuable practical insights into the complexities and urgency of managing cyber threats. I’ve been involved triaging incidents and conducting threat intelligence, shadowing skilled team members who’ve shared their knowledge and best-practice guidance along the way. I’ve learned a lot already and become familiar with key incident management processes, enabling me to complete tasks independently to a high standard. I have also been completing the SIREN course, preparing me well to join the Incident Response team in January.
Meet Joey
Hi, I’m Joey Satka. I’m currently in the placement year of a Computer Science BSc at City, University of London. When selecting a cyber security placement opportunity, I was looking, not just for a company with a strong technical reputation, but also for one that prioritises growth and learning across its teams. Solis definitely ticked those boxes. I was also attracted by their proactive approach to security. My goal over the next year is to strengthen my technical skills and learn everything I can from professionals with years of hands-on experience, something that’s essential in a sector where technical experience counts for so much.
During my time with the Cyber Threat Analysis team, I’ve gained hands-on experience of identifying vulnerabilities and exploits to effectively reduce cyber risk. I’ve developed a range of threat-hunting skills, from conducting manual searches using tools like Shodan to programming custom scans for unique security needs. I’ve worked on automation skills, helping to keep the team informed of emerging vulnerabilities as early as possible. I’ve also had the opportunity to participate in a Censys training workshop, which expanded my ability to leverage internet-wide scanning data for more comprehensive threat analysis. This sharpened my technical abilities and enabled me to help clients minimise cyber risk by alerting them proactively to potential vulnerabilities.
Meet David
Hi, I’m David Junior. I’m a Computer Science student at the University of Leicester. I’m currently on a placement year as a Cyber Security Associate with Solis. I decided to apply for this placement to gain practical industry-specific experience from an award-winning cyber security company. My aim is to deepen my understanding of cyber security beyond what’s covered in a university course, and explore some of the specialist areas within this field. I’m hoping to strengthen my technical background and develop a holistic view of cyber security practices and processes.
I’m currently four months into my first rotation, with the Incident Response team. I’ve gained hands on experience of live incidents and learnt about all aspect of the incident response lifecycle, from triage to containment, investigation and remediation. These are skills I couldn’t have learned from university alone. I’ve also worked on projects aimed at automating and streamlining various stages of the investigation process, helping our team manage incidents more efficiently.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue contributing to impactful projects, while building on my technical knowledge and practical skills across the various different areas of cyber security.
Meet James
Hey, I’m James Ledger. I’m studying Software Engineering the University of Kent, taking a year out to do an industrial placement here at Solis. I wanted to find a cyber security placement that would help me understand how threat actors exploit normally benign software to attack and compromise an environment. I’m learning a lot about how threat actors abuse software - and how I can use what I’ve learned studying software engineering to make software that is more secure.
I wanted to be part of a growing team of smart and talented people, and that’s exactly what I’ve found here at Solis! I joined the Managed Detection and Response (MDR) team, which has given me the chance to learn from the best, by shadowing our MDR Analysts. This has given me a deeper insight into how threat actors attack networks, how malware behaves, and how to identify and remediate threats effectively without disrupting clients’ daily operations.
I’m seeing first-hand how the battle between cyber security and threat actors is constantly evolving, and I’m learning how we detect new techniques used by threat actors. Integrating this knowledge into our threat-hunting efforts helps us maintain the utmost vigilance by detecting and preventing attacks before they occur.
When I’m not investigating threats, I work on programming scripts and tools to help improve our processes. We use these scripts, for example, to help generate effective and useful information about the current health of our environment, alerting us to any changes so we can take quick decisive action to remediate any issues.
With a few months left in my MDR rotation, I know there is still much to learn, and I’m eager to continue growing!
